Les Miserables - French Jet Jewellery

As the world and their granny, mother and her dog have now seen Les Miserables, I can amaze and facinate you with a little factoid...  you may already know this if you've read the book - yes there was a book.
Jean Val Jean makes his fortune from French Jet jewellery and it is what Fantine makes in his factory before her fall into poverty.
French Jet is Black glass and the process to press it into intricate shapes and designs, making it suitable for jewellery manufacture was perfected by the French, hence the name. It was invented as a response to the demand for Whitby Jet jewellery and it was much easier and cheaper to manufacrure jewellery from it, than from Whitby Jet.

If you'd like to find out more about French Jet then check out our  French Jet information page and if you'd like to find out more about the epic story behine the film and show les Miserables theen read the book. It will take a while, but it is worth it, for the charactures back stories alone.

Make A Vintage Belt

Not only do I love buying and selling vintage things, but, I also love upcycling and making new things too.
With finances tight at present - if you're wanting to update your wardrobe, try a 'new' vintage tie belt, it looks lovely, is totally unique and and is recycled too.
This project is really easy and you need only the most basic of sewing skills - so I thought I'd share it with you...

1. You'll need an old or vintage men's tie and a small old or vintage buckle - this needs to be one that does not have a prong.
2. Loop the thin end of the tie round the central bar of the buckle and secure with a pin, making sure that the front of the buckle is showing on the front of the tie / belt.
3. Secure the thin end of the tie to the back with a few small, neat stitches and hey-presto you've got a 'new' vintage belt.
4. If you want a fuller looking belt, you could try using a long narrow vintage scarf or cravat....

 Good Luck & Enjoy

Easey-Peasey New Year Clear Out and Clean Up Vintage Style!

feather duster
Here we are with a brand new year and as we take down the Christmas decs home can feel a little drab, unloved and cluttered, so it's the perfect ( and traditional) time to do a little gentle cleaning, tidying and de-cluttering. Clearing out unwanted bits and pieces gives you a happy clutter free home ready for the Spring and you can even clean up (financially) with those unwanted bits and pieces.
Thanks to the many vintage housekeeping books i've read over the years, i've compiled a little easey-peasey  Vintage Style Spring Cleaning Guide.
  • Go through you home room by room or if it's really full of stuff, section off a part of a room at a time to attack.
  • Get out some boxes and plastic bags and tackle the clutter. First remove and recycle or bin any actual rubbish.
  • If you spot and unwanted items pop them in a box - more on how to dispose ogf these and make some cash later.
  • Once the space is a little clearer, get a good long handlled feather duster and remove cobwebs & dust from from walls and ceilings, working from top to bottom.
  •  Get a bucket of warm soapy water and a clean cloth and again, working from top down, wipe shelves, furniture, doors and surfaces, don't forget to clean behind furniture, you never know what lost treasure you'll find there! But, don't move large pieces of furniture on your own, and be careful not to injure yourself. Also do take care that the surfaces you wipe will not be damaged by the water, and if in doubt, dry dust or use and appropriate polish.
  •  Once its all clean and dry put back the items you want to keep, washing or dusting delicate items, first, again if you think water might do damage, just dry dust them.
  • The final stage is to brush, vacume and wash the floor. If you have rugs and it's a dry day you can hang them on a washing line or fence to air and give them a shake and bash with the back of a hand brush to remove dust.
  • Repeat these steps for each area and room and you'll soon have you're home sparkling vintage style!

Once all the cleaning is done, then it's time to decide what to do with your unwanted items. Throwing things away is a recent concept and really in today's economic climate it seems ever more silly!
Firstly, there may be items you can sell and raise a little cash - good for your purse and the planet (less landfill). Check out our guide to selling your How To Sell Your Vintage Stuff For Free guide. Even if your items are not vintage, they may be collectable or just have value, so take a look at our guide.
Modern items and electricals can be sold at auction just like antique and vintage items or there are now a number of online services that will buy old CD's DVDs, electricals and even Designer clothes and accessories - so do your research and again check out our selling guide for tips to help. Make sure the company you're dealing with is well rated and that you are happy you'll get a fair deal, check the contract carefully, especially for details about what happens if they don't buy or make you a good offer - are there fees who pays for returns postage etc.... You can do a web  search for the company name for reviews and comments about their services.
If you cann't be bothered having done all that cleaning then why not give your unwanted items away, it's a great way to share the love and has a top feel-good-factor. Is there anything that you think a friend or loved one might like to have and if not then make a great donation to your local charity shop. Even worn out clothing and fabric is useful to them - they will get money for it from the Rag Traders, so don't throw anything away. Some charities will even collect, if you give them a call.
Finally, once you've done all your hard work, you might want to add a little extra vintage sparkle, with some pretty vintage home ware ......

The Secret Guide to Buying Perfect Presents on a Budget.

It can be really challenging to give the perfect gift when you‘ve got a very limited budget. But, we have some really great ideas to help you with that.
The key to successfully finding or making a great gift on a budget is all about preparation.
Make a list of the people you are giving gifts to, do it in plenty of time, so if you’ve forgotten anyone, you stand a chance of remembering before Christmas Eve, just as the shops are shutting. It also gives you time to find the right gift at the right price, leaing it too late means you can miss good deals or have to pay extra for super-fast postage.

Work out how much you have to spend on each person and stick to your budget, don’t forget to include the cost of wrapping paper and other accessories, batteries etc...

Make sure you’ve the wrapping and tagging sorted, a well wrapped gift always makes a good impression.  A lovely way to wrap is to use Brown parcel paper, it’s really inexpensive from the market, or Post Office and usually much cheaper than Christmas wrapping paper per meter, if you’re wrapping a few gifts you’ll need quite a bit. You can get the children employed customising the wrapping paper with felt tips or glitter if you’re feeling brave! If you want something a little less home spun and chicer then tie your Brown Paper parcels with thin Satin ribbon, again buy it cheap by the meter from a haberdashers (I DO love that word!) or from the market, again it will be cheaper per meter than Christmas ribbon.

You’ll also need labels, you can make your own lovely ones, from last year’s Christmas cards, just cut out cute features from the cards make a hole with a hole punch and thread on to your parcel ribbon. Alternatively Brown parcel labels look lovely or even draw on your own on to the parcel with a Black felt tip.

Once you have sorted the wrapping, list and budget, then the next step is research, you can think about the recipients. Do any of them have specific interests that might give inspiration for a gift or can you think of anything they really like or dislike. You can then add the things to look for and to avoid to the list.

Take a good nosey online to compare prices, can you bulk buy the sweeties, chocolates or other items to save a little, check out special offers and make sure you factor in the postage costs too - we do free UK postage so don’t worry about this if you’re shopping with us!
Decide what you are going to buy and place your orders or go and get it, allowing plenty of time for delivery and wrapping when you get it.

A really easy way to give an inexpensive and appreciated gift is to do a little gift pack, with a few small items. This is where vintage gifts really come into their own, they offer so much more for you money than a standard shop bought present and their uniqueness makes them something really special.

For girls of all ages think: vintage jewellery, sweeties or chocolate, a pretty Christmas bauble, nail polish, a pretty pot of lip salve, vintage gloves, skittles, note cards, pocket mirror, a purse, a pretty vintage scarf, or yummy hand-made soap.
For boys big and small, think vintage books, sweeties or chocs, gliders, badges, vintage maps, spinning tops, vintage camera, scarf.

Once you have the gifts for each recipient wrap each in Brown Paper and stack them, tying the stack with ribbon and add a tag.
Please note that present wrapping is best done in from of It’s a Wonderful Life or Muppets Christmas Carol, with mince pies and a small tipple or a good cuppa to hand.
Finally, place under the tree and heave sigh of contented relief.
I wish you all a very merry Christmas.

P.S. My top tip is to order an extra gift or two in case you wake on Christmas morning with that sinking feeling and the realisation that you forgot someone or you get an extra visitor!

Christmas Sparkle On a Budget.

As the Festive season hoves into view, I'm sure that many of you are asking the same question – How can we do Christmas better and cheaper this year?
So here at Steptoes Dog we’ve thought long and hard and come up with our favourite way to make your celebrations go with a fizz, without blowing the budget.
So here are our top 5:
1.       Make some or all of your gifts. A home-made gift is a really lovely thing to receive, and there’s still plenty of time to make them. We’ve got some great home-made gift ideas so check them out!
2.       Christmas decorations can cost quite a bit, so we’ve got together some of our favourite ideas for home-made Christmas decorations that will add lots of festive cheer to your home without breaking the bank....
3.       If you’re having family or friends over, ask them each to bring one thing, such as a bottle of wine, or some cheese.
4.       Make your own... Almost everything that we consume at Christmas is cheaper if you make it yourself. Prepare and cook your own food, as much as you can, avoid pre-prepared food, it is more expensive. Look online for good recipes and follow them, so you don’t make costly mistakes. Christmas cake and pudding will need doing soon. Home-made Christmas Crackers are much nicer than shop bought ones.
5.        Buy your Christmas gifts at Steptoes Dog, we’ve got a 45% discount running at the moment, so don’t miss out on this chance to make the Christmas cheer go much further!
We wish you the Compliments of the Season!
